Menstrual Discs

All Flex menstrual discs, including Flex Disc, Flex Plant+ Disc, and Flex Reusable Disc, can be safely worn for a maximum of 12 hours.

Flex Disc and Flex Plant+ Disc are single-use products and cannot be washed and reworn. After 12 hours, dispose of your Flex Disc or Plant+ Disc and insert a new one.

Flex Reusable Disc, on the other hand, is meant to be washed and re-worn. Make sure to empty and clean your Reusable Disc at least every 12 hours (using warm water and a mild soap or cleanser) before reinserting.

Menstrual discs, including all Flex products, are regulated by the FDA. They are approved for a maximum of 12 hours of continuous wear. Please use as directed.

If you’re a first-time menstrual disc user, don’t forget to reference the Instructions for Use enclosed in your disc’s packaging! For more detailed information, including video, head over to our complete “How to use a disc” page

Just need a quick refresher on disc insertion and removal? Here’s an abbreviated version:

How to insert a menstrual disc:

  1. Wash your hands. Always wash your hands before insertion and removal. If you’re using Flex Reusable Disc, wash your disc, too, with warm water and a mild cleanser.

  2. Find a position to insert your disc. Some sit over the toilet, some stand with a leg elevated, some insert in a full squat. Play around until you find a position that works best for you!

  3. Pinch the disc in half and begin inserting it into the vaginal canal, making sure you are pushing the edge that goes in first down and back towards your tailbone so that it sits at an angle and fully covers the cervix. Down and back is key! If you’re using Flex Reusable Disc, insert the disc notch-side-first

  4. Tuck the rim above and behind your pubic bone. Make sure it's pushed past the pubic bone as far as it can go. Another way to think about it: You want to bring the front rim of the disc up towards your belly button, so the front of the disc is angled higher than the back.

  5. You shouldn't be able to feel the disc. If you can still feel the disc internally,

meaning with your vagina, just take it out and try it again. When you’re first starting out, know that it’s normal for it to take a few tries before you’ve mastered insertion!

How to remove a menstrual disc:

  1. Relax. Making sure your muscles aren't tense will help you remove your menstrual disc swiftly and comfortably. So take a couple of deep breaths. You got this!

  2. While sitting over the toilet or standing in the shower, bear down gently on your pelvic floor. The sensation will be similar to that of pooping (don't worry, you won't actually poop). This will help pop the disc out from behind the pubic bone, making it easier for you to reach. Another way to think about engaging your pelvic floor is to imagine you’re hitting the “eject” button for your vagina and push your disc forward

  3. With a clean finger, hook the rim of the disc in a "come hither" motion and pull it out gently. Be sure to keep your disc horizontal (parallel to the floor) to prevent any spillage.

  4. Empty the contents of the disc into the toilet or down the shower drain. If you’re using Flex Disc or Flex Plant+ Disc, dispose of the used disc in the trash. If you’re using Flex Reusable Disc, rinse with cold water and then clean thoroughly with warm water and a mild soap or cleanser (like Flex Foaming Cleanser), then air dry and store in its pouch until next time.

Know that it’s normal for it to take a couple of cycles before you’ve mastered disc insertion and removal! Every body is different. You might even find that the position of your cervix—which changes almost daily—impacts your insertion angle. The more comfortable you get with your body and with the disc, the easier it will be.

Worried you'll make a bloody mess of your bathroom floor when removing your menstrual disc? You won't! It just takes a little practice. While you might get a little bit of blood on your hands or finger, as long as you hold your disc level and pull it out slowly, you'll keep that white bathroom rug totally pristine.

If you’re using a disc for the very first time, we recommend starting out by removing it in the shower. This helps your body relax (yay, warm water!) and takes the mess factor out of the equation.

To help ensure a less messy removal when you're on the toilet, use your pelvic floor muscles to empty your disc partially before you remove it. This technique is called hands-free emptying (or self-emptying). Then, simply remove the disc while remaining seated. Any drips will land safely in the toilet.

For easy cleanup on the go, check out our plant-based, flushable wipes (they're biodegradable when flushed!). They're gentle on intimate parts and are especially handy if you need to change your disc in a public bathroom. Don’t forget to grab a pack of our Eco Disposal Pouches

With proper insertion, neither you nor your partner should be able to feel your menstrual disc during sex. This includes Flex Disc, Flex Plant+ Disc, and Flex Reusable Disc. However, there are some exceptions if your partner (or toy you’re using) is especially large: In this case, one or both of you may occasionally notice the rim.

If you can easily feel your disc or if it feels like it’s getting in the way, you may need to reposition it. Read our tips about mastering menstrual disc placement here

You may also need to try a different position. The best position for your partner to avoid feeling the disc during sex is either missionary or doggy style. Once you get in the groove of things, you can mix it up. 😉

If you're still experiencing issues, please reach out to us at hello@flexfits.com. We're always happy to chat about tips for making the discs work for you!

First, don’t panic! A menstrual disc (or cup, or tampon, or any period product, for that matter) cannot get “lost” inside your body. Your vagina is shaped like a cul-de-sac, thanks to your cervix.

In most cases, all it takes is a little relaxation and some command over your pelvic floor muscles to get literally anything that might happen to be stuck inside your vagina back out of your body.

If you’re having a hard time removing your menstrual disc, including Flex Disc, Flex Plant+ Disc, or Flex Reusable Disc, please reach out to our team of Flexperts at (800) 931-0882 so they can help. You can text! Hours are 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. PST every day of the week.

In the meantime, here are some additional tips and tricks to help with disc removal:

First, take a few deep breaths. Try using a box breathing technique to calm your nervous system and help you relax your pelvic floor muscles. Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, out for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, and repeat.

If you’ve just had period sex with a disc, make sure you wait at least 15 minutes to give your body a chance to “cool off” and your cervix to move back to its normal position. During sex, arousal can make the vaginal canal twice as long as normal! This moves your cervix further back in your body, which can make it tough to reach your disc if you try to remove it right away.

Insert a clean finger into the vaginal canal and, at the same time, push down (or think down and forward, like ejecting a DVD) with your pelvic floor muscles. You can deepen the push by saying “moo” out loud at the same time—it may sound silly, but it really works.

When you bear down, you should feel the rim of your disc move further down the vaginal canal and pop out from behind your pubic bone. Make sure your finger is already inserted while you do this! When the disc is easily within reach, hook your finger under the rim and slowly pull it out, keeping it parallel to the floor to avoid spills. If you feel like your finger is slipping out from under the rim, try gently bracing against one side of the vaginal wall.

Still not working? Try a different body position: Squatting low (bum-to-floor) with your feet wider than hip-distance can make it easier to pop the disc out from behind the pubic bone. Doing this while in the shower is a great way to stay relaxed and prevent any messiness. Alternatively, try laying on your bed, sitting on the toilet with feet propped up on a stool, standing with one leg propped up, or even tabletop pose.

If you're still struggling with removing your disc, please take 30 minutes to an hour to relax your body, and come back to removing your disc once you feel calm and ready. Do not use any foreign objects to remove your disc as this can cause damage to your vaginal canal. Contact us whenever you need help or, if it’s after-hours and you’re still stuck, try asking a partner or friend for help. You can also always reach out to a healthcare provider or Ob/Gyn!

Yes, most likely!

When we say “you shouldn’t be able to feel your menstrual disc,” we mean you shouldn’t be able to feel it with your vagina when you’re going about your daily activities. This includes Flex Disc, Flex Plant+ Disc, and Flex Reusable Disc.

If it’s comfortable and you aren’t experiencing leakage, your disc is inserted correctly!

Note: Bathroom leakage, or seeing a little blood in the toilet when you use the restroom, is normal and does not mean your disc is inserted incorrectly. Learn more about hands-free emptying here

Keep in mind that every body is different, so your ability to easily feel your disc when you insert a finger will vary from person to person. However, the vaginal canal isn't that long, so most users can still feel their menstrual disc with their index or middle finger after it's been inserted all the way.

If you can feel the disc with your vagina, read our pro tips here. And as always, feel free to reach out to the Flexperts for 1:1 help! Call/text us at 800-931-0882 or email hello@flexfits.com

When inserted properly, you shouldn't be able to feel a menstrual disc at all (with your vagina). Over 97% of users surveyed did not feel Flex Disc while using it.

In other words, once you’re going about your day, you shouldn’t be able to feel the disc inside of you. This includes Flex Disc, Flex Plant+ Disc, and Flex Reusable Disc

If you’re experiencing any sensation or discomfort, it’s likely caused by the disc not being inserted quite right.

The first thing we suggest is removing your disc and taking a moment to locate your cervix. You can try to feel your cervix by inserting a clean finger into the vaginal canal and feeling around until you notice a firm spot that feels like a tiny donut (about the firmness of the tip of your nose). It may also feel like puckered lips. 😗 If you can’t reach your cervix—this is normal!—bear down gently with your pelvic floor to bring it closer to you.

Once you’ve located your cervix, you’ll have a better idea of where your disc needs to sit and how far back it will need to be inserted.

To make insertion easier, try doing so from a seated or squatting position to move your cervix closer to the vaginal opening. Remember: You want to aim the rim of the disc that enters your body first down and back, towards your tailbone. Aim for under your cervix! Then, you’ll use your finger to pull the front rim (the side that enters your body last) straight up towards your belly button, tucking it securely behind your pubic bone. Don’t be afraid to get in there!

You can even use your pelvic floor muscles during insertion to “pull” the disc into place once you’ve pushed it down and back as far as it will go by doing a kegel. This is basically just an inward pulling motion with your pelvic floor—the opposite of bearing down.

When you’re done inserting, the disc should be sitting at an angle and completely surrounding your cervix. Think back rim down towards the floor, front rim up towards your belly button.

Everyone's anatomy is different, so don’t be surprised if it takes you a couple of cycles to get the hang of using a disc! Read our tips for users who have a high or low cervix or a tilted cervix or uterus.

No! Menstrual discs, including Flex Disc, Flex Plant+ Disc, and Flex Reusable Disc, will not cause period blood to go back up into the uterus—even during sex, intense workouts, yoga, swimming, etc. Period products have not been associated with retrograde menstruation.

If you have any concerns about retrograde menstruation more generally or if you’re experiencing any pelvic pain or unusual period symptoms, reach out to a healthcare provider or Ob/Gyn.

Have more questions? We've got answers! Feel free to reach out to us at hello@flexfits.com.

Yup! Flex menstrual discs, including Flex Disc, Flex Plant+ Disc, and Flex Reusable Disc, are totally safe to use with water-based personal lubricants. Whether you need a little lube to help make inserting your disc easier or you’re using a disc for mess-free period sex™, you’re good to go.

Have more questions? Call/text the Flexperts at 800-931-0882 or email us anytime: hello@flexfits.com.

Nope! A menstrual disc won't interfere with your body's production of natural lubrication in the vagina. Natural lubricants come from Bartholin, nabothian, and skene's glands, as well as from the vaginal epithelium (lining) itself. So between those glands and the epithelium, the vagina is typically well lubricated and your disc will not change or interfere with that in any way.

However, extra moisture is never a bad thing—if you decide you want additional lubrication, we recommend using a water-based lube.

The way your menstrual disc will work with a tilted cervix or uterus (AKA a retroverted uterus) really depends on your unique anatomy. No two tilted uteruses are tilted in the exact same way.

Flex Disc, Flex Plant+ Disc, and Flex Reusable Disc were designed to fit most bodies, but there’s a small percentage who it does not work for. The angle of your uterus may or may not affect your disc's ability to create a good seal. You may have to experiment with different insertion methods to find the one that works best for you. When in doubt, you can always chat about this with your healthcare provider or gynecologist.

You may find that a menstrual cup, like Flex Cup, is better suited for your anatomy. The good news is that, when you buy a Flex Cup, you also get two free Flex Discs to test out (so you can see which you prefer).

We hope this information helps! We want you to have the most comfortable period possible. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to reach out. Call/text the Flexperts at 800-931-0882 or email us anytime: hello@flexfits.com

Lots of Flex Disc users have IUDs! Flex menstrual discs were designed to be IUD-friendly—they do not rely on suction to stay in place.

There is a small risk of any internally worn menstrual product getting caught on your IUD, including tampons, menstrual discs, and menstrual cups. That’s why we recommend consulting with your healthcare provider or Ob/Gyn prior to using a new period product if you have an IUD. They will have more information about your specific IUD and how it’s positioned in relation to your internal anatomy. They can also trim your IUD strings shorter if needed.

For more info, check out our blog article about using menstrual cups and discs with an IUD.

Yes—you can pee, poop, whatever you need to do while wearing a menstrual disc. It will stay out of the way. Keep in mind that a little bit of bathroom leakage is totally normal (and actually a good thing!).

When you use the bathroom, you engage your pelvic floor muscles, which can push your disc out from behind the pubic bone, letting a little fluid out into the toilet. This technique is called hands-free emptying.

Just remember to use a clean finger to tuck your disc back up into place when you’re done.

Note: Consult with your physician prior to using Flex Disc, Flex Reusable Disc, or Flex Plant+ Disc if you are prone to vaginal/bacterial infections, yeast infections, urinary tract infections, or have other medical, anatomical, or genetic predispositions which may increase your risk for these types of infections.

If you experience painful or difficult urination, or an inability to completely empty your bladder while using a Flex menstrual disc, discontinue use immediately and consult with your physician.

Totally can! Some of our most loyal Flex Disc users are pro athletes or fitness enthusiasts who swear by the disc’s comfort and all-day wear. You can squat with ease, lift weights, crush that 5K, or sweat it out in hot yoga without worrying about leaks or irritation.

The thumb trick is one of our favorite pro tips for menstrual disc insertion (including Flex Disc, Flex Plant+ Disc, and Flex Reusable Disc).

While inserting the disc, using your thumb can be super helpful to get the disc down and back into the right position. Many users find that their thumb naturally goes in that direction and is steadier than an index finger.

Simply pinch the disc and insert it down and back into the vaginal canal. Once you can no longer keep the disc pinched, place your thumb on the rim and push the disc all the way back (angled down towards your tailbone) the rest of the way until it's just behind the pubic bone. You may need to insert another finger afterwards to pull and tuck the rim of the disc up behind your pubic bone. This final step is important for keeping the disc in place and preventing leaks!

One of our favorite features of a menstrual disc (including Flex Disc, Flex Reusable Disc, and Flex Plant+ Disc) is the ability to empty it in the middle of the day without removing it from your body.

If you’re wondering, how on earth?!? Prepare to be mind-blown…

Imagine you’re a few hours into wearing your disc. It’s a heavy flow day, but you’re busy at work/school/etc. and you’d rather not fully change your period product in a shared restroom.

So, you go to the bathroom as usual, but when you’re done, you give your pelvic floor muscles a little extra downward push (while still sitting on the toilet). Imagine you’re trying to poop or, alternatively, trying to “give birth” to your disc. You should see or feel a little blood dump out into the toilet.

That’s it! You did it. Your disc is now significantly less full. All you did was engage your pelvic floor muscles to pop the front rim of the disc out from behind your pubic bone, effectively “untucking” it. Now, all you need to do is use a clean finger to push your disc back into its tucked and secure position.

This trick is called hands-free emptying (also known as “auto-dumping”). If you use this tactic every time you go to the bathroom while wearing a menstrual disc, you’ll probably notice that just one disc will last you the entire day—its full 12-hour lifespan. This means less time feeling bothered by being on your period and more time doing the things you enjoy!

Read more about hands-free emptying on the blog. Have questions? Feel free to reach out to our Flexperts: Email us at hello@flexfits.com or give us a call at 800-931-0882.

First off, don’t stress! Seeing a little blood in the toilet or on your TP when wearing a menstrual disc is a-okay. What’s happening is that your disc is sliding down a little bit in your vaginal canal when you engage your pelvic floor to pee or poop. Your disc’s front edge may have made its way just beyond your pubic bone—and this lets a little fluid out.

Believe it or not, this is a feature we really love about using a menstrual disc! The technique is called hands-free emptying; read more about it here and on the blog

Basically, you can purposefully engage those pelvic floor muscles to partially empty your disc into the toilet when using the bathroom. This will help you maximize your wear time to the full 12 hours (even on your heaviest days) without needing to remove or change your disc.

Just remember to either use a clean finger or do a kegel to pull your disc back up into place—in its tucked position behind the pubic bone—when you’re done.

Flex Disc, Flex Plant+ Disc,  and Flex Reusable Disc all fall into the ‘menstrual disc’ category of period products: Like a cup, they collect (rather than absorb) your period blood, but they’re worn in a different part of the vagina: the vaginal fornix. The vaginal fornix is your vagina’s ‘rear wall’—it’s the widest part of the vaginal canal, just beneath your cervix.

Menstrual discs have many benefits that set them apart from traditional period products: They offer ultra-comfortable, 12-hour wear, can be worn during mess-free period sex™, and they’re easy to use for beginners and pros alike.

Menstrual discs are held in place by the pubic bone. They have a wider diameter than a standard (bell-shaped) menstrual cup, which is worn lower down in the vaginal canal.

Flex Plant+ Disc and Flex Disc are single-use products and cannot be washed and reworn. Plant+ and Flex Disc are both made with medical-grade polymers—however, Plant+ Disc’s polymer is 40% plant-based and derived from sugarcane.

Flex Reusable Disc, on the other hand, is a 100% reusable product made with medical-grade silicone. Flex Reusable Disc was designed to be washed and reworn (just like Flex Cup) and has a lifespan of 2+ years.  Between cycles, simply wash with a mild soap or cleanser and store in its carrying pouch.

All Flex period products (including Flex Disc, Plant+ Disc, Flex Reusable Disc, and Flex Cup)  are made with medical-grade, hypoallergenic materials that won’t host toxic bacteria or alter your vaginal pH. They feature a higher capacity than traditional period products, like tampons or pads.

Yes! You can swim, work out, do yoga, travel, climb mountains, or settle in for a binge session of your favorite TV show without having to worry about leaks.

Swimming with a menstrual disc means swimming with no strings, no waterlogged feeling, and no worries. While we’re on the topic, you can also shower, take baths, make waves in the ocean, or chill out in a hot tub while wearing a menstrual disc—including Flex Disc, Flex Reusable Disc, and Flex Plant+ Disc

Both menstrual discs and cups offer many benefits over traditional period products: They can be worn for up to 12 hours at a time, have a higher capacity and produce less waste than traditional period products, don’t cause dryness or irritation, and are made with biologically inert materials that do not disrupt vaginal pH

What’s the difference between the two?

Menstrual Discs:

A menstrual disc is a flat, flexible period product that collects blood while worn in the vaginal fornix. ICYMI, the vaginal fornix is your vagina’s ‘rear wall’—it’s the widest part of the vagina, just beneath your cervix. Menstrual discs are held in place by the pubic bone. They have a wider diameter than a standard (bell-shaped) menstrual cup, which is worn lower down in the vaginal canal.

The term ‘menstrual disc’ was coined by Flex Founder & CEO Lauren Schulte Wang in 2016—even before The Flex Company had officially launched. Not long after, Wang acquired Softdisc, a product then known as Instead Softcup and categorized as a menstrual cup. Even in the company’s earliest days, Wang recognized the need to create a distinct category for this unique product.

Because of their placement in the fornix, menstrual discs do not block the vaginal canal. This helps to alleviate common yet aggravating period symptoms, like cramping and irritation. In 2018, Flex conducted a survey of 357 customers in which the following was reported:

  • 64.67% responded that they had experienced less cramping with Flex Disc compared to their previous period product.

  • 79.94% responded that they had experienced reduced dryness with Flex Disc compared to their previous period product.

  • 86.89% responded that they had experienced less irritation with Flex Disc compared to their previous period product.

The flat fit design also allows menstrual discs to be worn during period sex for an experience that’s completely mess-free.

Menstrual discs are either disposable or reusable. The first menstrual disc on the market, Softdisc—still a part of the Flex family of brands—is a single-use, disposable product. Flex Disc and Flex Plant+ Disc are also disposable menstrual discs. All disposable discs offered by Flex are made with medical-grade polymers and can be worn for up to 12 hours at a time (after 12 hours, they must be removed and thrown away).

Flex also offers a sustainable, 100% medical-grade silicone menstrual disc that can be washed and re-worn, just like a menstrual cup: Flex Reusable Disc. The Reusable Disc lasts for years and simply needs to be cleaned with a mild soap or cleanser in between wears and prior to storing.

Menstrual cups:

Menstrual cups, on the other hand, are always reusable. Most are made with silicone (Flex Cup is made with 100% medical-grade silicone, just like Flex Reusable Disc). There are hundreds of menstrual cups on the market today—but all are not created equal.

Menstrual cups, including Flex Cup, are worn in the vaginal canal (the same place a tampon sits) and are held in place with suction. To insert a menstrual cup, you can use one of several different types of folds, like the “C fold,” shown below. To insert a menstrual disc, you simply pinch it in half. Both products pop back open once inserted, creating a seal that helps to prevent leaks.

When it comes time to remove your menstrual cup, it’s important to “break the seal” and release the suction before pulling it out. Traditional menstrual cups must be removed by inserting two fingers, gripping the base of the cup, and pinching to manually break the seal. Flex Cup is the only period cup in the world that features a patented pull-tab that breaks the seal for you—so removing your cup is as easy as pulling out a tampon.

Flex Cup is available in two sizes; Flex menstrual discs are available in one size designed to fit most vaginas. Keep in mind that only menstrual discs can be worn during penetrative sex; cups must be removed before sex.

We get it—it’s hard to imagine. How can you wear a menstrual disc and have sex at the same time?! But you totally can, and it’s one of our favorite benefits of using a disc. Here's some more detail:

The vagina expands and elongates during arousal and intercourse. This allows a menstrual disc to be worn during sexual activities without it getting in the way or coming out. It already sits at the back of the vaginal canal, in the fornix, and it should move well out of the way when you’re turned on and once penetration takes place.

In other words, a menstrual disc should be comfortable for both you and your partner during period sex—and that includes sex of all kinds (from penetrative to oral). There is a chance that one of you may notice the rim, but there shouldn’t be any pain or irritation. How much you or your partner may feel the disc depends on your position, your anatomy, and your partner’s anatomy.

Warning: You may have stronger orgasms while wearing a disc! This is because it gently rubs on the cervix during intercourse for additional stimulation. 😉

FYI: Only menstrual discs (Flex Disc, Flex Plant+ Disc, or Flex Reusable Disc) can be worn during penetrative sex. If you’re using a menstrual cup like Flex Cup, you’ll need to remove it beforehand.

Flex Disc

The majority of Flex Disc users have heavy flows! We’ve heard from tons of customers with especially heavy periods who swear by Flex Disc, thanks to its higher capacity and 12-hour (read: all day) wear. The disc can hold up to 60 mL of fluid. That’s as much as 5+ super tampons!

Worried about leaks? Don’t stress. When inserted correctly, Flex Disc shouldn’t leak. You can even extend your wear time on your heaviest days by taking advantage of the disc’s hands-free emptying feature: Just bear down gently with your pelvic floor muscles when using the bathroom. This will shift the position of the disc so that it allows a little fluid out into the toilet. When done, simply use a clean finger to tuck your disc back into place behind your pubic bone.

Flex Disc was designed to fit most vaginas. When you pinch the disc to insert it, it’s about the same size as a tampon. Once in place, it warms and forms to your unique anatomy to prevent leaks and prioritize comfort.

Yes! Flex Disc can be safely worn for a maximum of 12 hours. After that, Flex Disc should be removed and thrown away. If your flow is especially heavy, you may find that you need to replace your disc more often—but you can also try out the disc’s mid-wear emptying feature (see “Will it leak?” above). Chat with our Flexperts for tips and tricks to achieve the max wear time.

When you remove your Flex Disc from its wrapper, you want to hold it so that the clear part (called the catch) is falling away from the black flexible rim, creating a bowl shape.

Still confused? Look for where the clear plastic catch attaches to the rim. Hold the disc so that this side of the rim is facing the floor.

Flex Disc cannot be flushed or recycled.

To dispose, simply place your used disc in its wrapper (if you saved it), in a Flex Eco Disposal Pouch, or wrap it in some toilet paper and place it in a regular wastebin. If preferred, you can rinse your disc before disposing. Some Flex Disc users prefer to remove and rinse their disc in the shower for a totally mess-free experience.

Please note that Flex Disc is a single-use product. It cannot be washed and reworn. After 12 hours of wear, you must remove your disc, dispose of it, and insert a new one.

Flex Disc is made with 100% medical-grade polymers. It is not made with BPA, phthalates, or natural rubber latex.

Flex Disc Ingredients: Medical-grade polymers, mineral oil, carbon black (for rim color), antioxidants.

Both Flex Disc® and Softdisc® are menstrual discs owned and manufactured by The Flex Co™

Softdisc (formerly Instead Softcup®) is the original disposable menstrual disc and the first menstrual disc to be sold in the United States. It was first introduced to the market as Instead® in 1994 by inventor and triathlete Audrey Contente and garnered a cult following.

In 2016, Flex Founder & CEO Lauren Schulte Wang coined the term “menstrual disc” in order to differentiate the unique shape and benefits of the menstrual disc vs. cup and, soon after, the product adopted its current name—Softdisc.

Today, Softdisc is carried in retailers across the United States and is sold on Amazon in both the USA and Canada. Learn more about the history of Softdisc,

Meanwhile, Flex Disc was launched in 2016 and became the first premium disposable menstrual disc to feature ComfortSeal™ technology in its rim. This unique blend of medical-grade polymers allows the disc to warm and form to your body, creating a custom fit at the base of the cervix that helps prevent leaks.

Like Flex Disc, Softdisc is made with medical-grade polymers, but it does not feature the same ComfortSeal™ technology as Flex Disc and is available at a lower price point.

Both Softdisc and Flex Disc have the same capacity (60 mL, as much as 5+ super tampons) and the same diameter (70 mm). Both products are FDA-registered, hypoallergenic, body-safe, and can be worn for up to 12 hours.

In 2021, The Flex Co™ added to its Soft line of products with a new menstrual cup, called Softcup®—a new and improved reusable period product designed for a more natural and comfortable fit. The Softcup menstrual cup is now available for purchase on the Flex website as well as on Amazon and in retail stores nationwide.

LEARN MORE ABOUT FLEX DISC.

LEARN MORE ABOUT SOFTDISC

Flex Disc is a disposable menstrual disc—an insertable alternative period product that provides ultra-comfortable, 12-hour wear. It sits in the vaginal fornix, all the way at the back of the vagina, and collects your menstrual fluid rather than absorbing it. Flex Disc is the first product we sold under the Flex® brand and one of the earliest menstrual discs to be brought to market in the USA.

Flex Disc is body-safe, ultra-comfortable, and is made with medical-grade polymers that won’t disrupt your vaginal pH or host toxic bacteria. It has the same capacity as 5+ super tampons and can be worn for up to 12 hours at a time: Swim, sleep, exercise, travel, and go about your entire day without worrying about leaks or discomfort. Even better, Flex Disc doesn’t block the vaginal canal during wear—which means you can enjoy all the mess-free period sex™ your heart desires.

As a single-use product, Flex Disc must be disposed of after 12 hours of wear. However, because of its higher capacity and longer wear time, it produces 60% less waste than traditional period products (like applicator tampons and pads).

Period cramps got you down? Over 64% of surveyed users reported fewer cramps with Flex Disc compared to their previous period product. This has to do with the fact that Flex Disc sits in the vaginal fornix, where there are fewer nerve endings, and doesn’t block the vaginal canal. Its flexible design moves with your body even when your uterus contracts.

First, wash your hands. Find a position to insert your disc: Some sit over the toilet, some stand with a leg elevated, some insert in a full squat. Play around until you find a position that works best for you!

Pinch the disc in half and begin inserting it into the vaginal canal, making sure you are pushing the edge that goes in first down and back towards your tailbone so that it sits at an angle and fully covers the cervix. Down and back is key! Then, tuck the front rim above and behind your pubic bone. Make sure it's pushed past the pubic bone as far as it can go.

You shouldn't be able to feel the disc. If you can still feel the disc internally, meaning with your vagina, just take it out and try it again. When you’re first starting out, know that it’s normal for it to take a few tries before you’ve mastered insertion! Learn more here.

Flex Disc shouldn’t leak when inserted properly. However, if you're seeing a little blood in the toilet or on your TP when you're going to the bathroom, that is totally normal. What’s happening is that when you engage your pelvic floor to pee or poop your disc’s front rim may have untucked from behind the pubic bone—and this can let a little fluid out.

Believe it or not, this is a feature we love about using a menstrual disc! The technique is called hands-free emptying (some call it self-emptying or auto-dumping), and it can help maximize your wear time to the full 12 hours (even on your heaviest days) without needing to remove or change your disc. After using the toilet, insert a clean finger and tuck the front rim back behind your pubic bone so it's secure for the remainder of your 12-hour wear. Read more about it here and on the blog

Yep! Because Flex Disc sits the vaginal fornix, it leaves the vaginal canal unobstructed—which means sex is on the table all month long. As long as the disc is inserted properly, neither you nor your partner should be able to feel it. However, if your partner (or toy!) is particularly large, there may be some contact with the disc. This shouldn't cause any discomfort and the disc should stay in place.

Whenever you try a new period product, removal can be a little wonky at first. You may get period blood on your hand but it gets easier the more you do it. Flex Disc can take a little bit more practice and for some people it can get a little messy. However most people will plan their disc wear around their schedule in order to remove the product in the comfort of their home or in the shower.

You’ll know your Flex Disc is inserted correctly when you don’t feel it internally. In other words, if you can go about your day without feeling Flex Disc, you’re good to go! However, if the disc is uncomfortable or if you’re experiencing lots of leakage, it might not be inserted far enough back. It’s also possible that the front rim might not be tucked behind your pubic bone.

Here's how to check if your disc is inserted correctly: First, wash your hands, and then use a clean finger to try to push your disc further down and back into the vaginal fornix (angled towards the floor). Once the disc is pushed as far back as it will go, make sure to tuck the front rim all the way up behind your pubic bone (think about pulling it up towards your belly button). Still having trouble? Get in touch with our Flexperts for help!

Flex Disc and Flex Plant+ Disc are not reusable. Both are disposable, single-use menstrual products that have been tested and approved for up to 12 hours of wear. After 12 hours, you must remove Flex Disc or Plant+ Disc and throw it away. Flex Disc and Flex Plant+ Disc cannot be washed and reinserted. If you are looking for a reusable period product, check out Flex Reusable Disc or Flex Cup!

Flex Reusable Disc

Flex Reusable Disc is a body-safe and sustainable menstrual disc that provides all-day comfort and a high capacity, holding as much as 6+ super tampons-worth (70 mL) of fluid. It was thoughtfully engineered to be as easy to insert and remove as our best-selling disposable Flex Disc—but it’s 100% reusable and lasts for years.

Flex Reusable Disc features two new technologies for easy insertion and removal: Made with dual silicone construction, the disc has an ultra-soft, thin catch and a sturdy rim for non-slip removal, while its patented insertion notch creates a narrow point at one end when the disc is pinched for easier placement.

Like Flex Disc, the Reusable Disc is worn in the vaginal fornix. This means the vaginal canal is left unobstructed, so you can enjoy all the mess-free period sex™ your heart desires. Sleep in, swim, go for a run, live your life: Flex Reusable Disc provides 12 hours of uninterrupted leak protection and comfortable wear. You might even forget you’re on your period.Flex Reusable Disc: Great for your wallet. Even better for the planet.

The lifespan of the Flex Reusable Disc varies depending on cleaning and care, but it can last for years. As a general rule of thumb, we recommend replacing your disc every two to three years, or as soon as it begins to show any signs of deterioration (such as powder or film, severe discoloration, persistent odor, etc). Refer to our Reusable Disc Cleaning Instructions to learn how to care for your silicone disc and extend its lifespan.

As a reminder, do not use Flex Reusable Disc if you have a yeast or bacterial infection. Resume use only once the infection has completely cleared. If Flex Reusable Disc was inserted during a yeast or bacterial infection, remove it immediately and dispose of it in the trash.

Flex Reusable Disc features a patented insertion notch that is designed to make placement of the disc even easier. Here’s how it works:

When you pinch your Reusable Disc before insertion, make sure the notch on the inner rim is oriented so that it helps create a narrow point, or “leading edge,” at one end. In other words, you want to hold the disc so that the notch is at the very tip of one of the two folds you create when pinching it in half. The notched portion of the rim is the first part that will enter your vagina during insertion.

Use this narrow point to guide the disc all the way down and back into the vaginal fornix, then tuck the front rim up and behind your pubic bone.

Taking good care of your Flex Reusable Disc will help to extend its lifespan and keep it clean and fresh for years.

Here’s what we recommend: During your period, remove, empty, and clean your Reusable Disc at least once every 12 hours. Start with clean hands and grab some mild soap or cleanser (like Flex Foaming Cleanser).

Rinse your disc in cool water first—this will help prevent odor and staining of the medical-grade silicone. Then, switch the water to warm and add a few pumps of cleanser. Use your fingers to massage the entire surface of the disc, including both sides of the rim and catch, and then rinse.

Shake off excess water or let the disc air dry before reinserting. If you’re putting your disc away until your next period, make sure it’s completely dry before storing. Store Flex Reusable Disc in a cool, dry place in its included pouch. Never store your disc in an airtight container.

Once every month or so, it’s a good idea to boil your Reusable Disc to sanitize it. Heat a pot of water to boiling on the stove. Place the disc in the water and boil for 10 minutes, keeping an eye on it the entire time and stirring occasionally to make sure the disc does not come in contact with the sides or bottom of the pot (as that could melt the silicone). Remove from the pot and let the disc cool and dry completely before storing.

Remember: Never wear Flex Reusable Disc if you have a yeast infection or other vaginal bacterial infection. If Flex Reusable Disc was inserted during a yeast or bacterial infection, remove it immediately and dispose of it in the trash. Do not attempt to clean and reuse your disc if it was worn during a vaginal infection.

  1. Wash your hands and clean Flex Reusable Disc using warm water and a mild soap or cleanser.
  2. Locate the easy insertion notch on the inner rim of the disc. publishedInsertion notch for FAQMake sure that the notch is facing up and the catch is situated below the rim, extending downwards. Pinch the disc in half so that the notch creates a leading edge (AKA a narrow point) for insertion that you’ll use to guide the disc into the vaginal canal.
  3. Choose a position: Either sit on the toilet, squat with knees wide, or put one leg up on the toilet. Relax your pelvic floor and gently separate your labia with your free hand.
  4. Insert the pinched disc (notched end first) into the vaginal canal, pushing the disc down and back into the fornix, towards your tailbone. Push the disc as far as it can comfortably go. It may feel strange but it shouldn’t hurt.
  5. Use your thumb or index finger to tuck the front rim of the disc upward and behind your pubic bone. When inserted properly, you should not be able to feel the disc internally (AKA with your vagina).

Mid-wear experience:

  1. When you first start using the Reusable Disc, it's normal to experience a small amount of leakage. It may take a couple of cycles to get the hang of positioning the disc and figure out how it sits in relation to your unique anatomy.
  2. Worried your Reusable Disc is getting full? You can empty some of the blood hands-free just by sitting on the toilet. To do so, bear down on your pelvic floor muscles (as if you're trying to poop). This will move the disc forward, just beyond the pubic bone, releasing some of its contents into the toilet. When you're done, use a clean finger to tuck the disc back into place.
  3. Anytime you go to the bathroom, remember to use a clean finger (or the thumb trick) to make sure your disc is in the proper position, tucked up behind the pubic bone.

How to remove Flex Reusable Disc:

  1. Wash your hands. Sit on the toilet and relax your pelvic floor muscles.
  2. Hook your finger (either your thumb, thumbnail-side-up or your index finger, nail-side-down) under the rim of the disc. Pull straight out, keeping the rim parallel to the floor. If needed, help push the disc out by bearing down on your pelvic floor as if you’re trying to poop.
  3. Empty the contents into the toilet and repeat steps 1-5 to clean and reinsert your Flex Reusable Disc.

You’ve got this! Having trouble? Please reach out to us anytime and talk to a real human: Text (800) 931-0882 or email hello@flexfits.com.Note: Consult with your physician prior to using Flex Reusable Disc if you are prone to vaginal/bacterial infections, yeast infections, urinary tract infections, or have other medical, anatomical, or genetic predispositions which may increase your risk for these types of infections. If you experience painful or difficult urination, or an inability to completely empty your bladder while using Flex Reusable Disc, discontinue use immediately and consult with your physician.

Yes! Flex Reusable Disc is great for any flow—light, medium, even extra heavy. The Reusable Disc holds the same amount of blood as 6+ super tampons (that’s 70 mL) and can be worn for up to 12 hours at a time. The average menstruating human bleeds about 15mL (equivalent to 1.5 super tampons) in 24 hours.

No matter how heavy your flow, Flex Reusable Disc has you covered. Thanks to hands-free emptying, you can extend your wear time even on your heaviest days. If you feel like your disc is getting full and it’s only been six hours, just let a little fluid out by bearing down with your pelvic floor muscles the next time you use the bathroom. This will allow a little blood out into the toilet. When done, just use a clean finger to tuck the disc back up and behind the pubic bone.

If you’re trying the Reusable Disc for the first time and you’re concerned about it getting too full, we recommend starting on a lighter day while in the comfort of your own home so you can get a sense of how much it collects during a 12-hour timeframe.

For additional peace of mind, it doesn’t hurt to wear a liner, pad, or period underwear as backup during your first few times using the disc. Generally speaking, it takes one or two cycles to get the hang of insertion and to master the positioning of the disc in relation to your unique anatomy.

First and foremost, it’s the attention to detail that went into the creation of Flex Reusable Disc. Any time we launch a new product, our team of medical device experts conduct extensive research to make sure our design will not only be functional and reliable, but that it will also work for the widest variety of bodies and vaginal anatomies.

All Flex products are manufactured in the USA and Canada—and the Reusable Disc is no exception.

One of our favorite features of the Flex Reusable Disc is its patented easy insertion notch. Located on the inner rim, the notch helps the disc form a leading edge (AKA a narrow insertion point). Simply guide the leading edge into the vaginal canal and push the disc all the way back into the vaginal fornix. Once in place, the disc will open up fully, providing leak protection and comfortable, all-day wear.

Unlike other reusable discs on the market, Flex Reusable Disc does not have a stem, as these may cause irritation or discomfort in the vaginal canal and can potentially be felt by your partner if you’re having penetrative sex

Our Reusable Disc is made with 100% medical-grade silicone and without dyes or colorants. Best of all, it features a high capacity for reliable coverage no matter how heavy your flow. The disc holds up to 70mL of period blood (that’s over 14 teaspoons!), which is the same capacity as 6+ super tampons. Wear it for up to 12 hours at a time and enjoy these benefits & more:

  • Does not promote the growth of toxic bacteria

  • Does not disrupt your vaginal pH

  • Designed to help reduce odor and cramps

  • Not linked to toxic shock syndrome (TSS)

  • Allows for easy insertion and removal, thanks to a patented design

Yes! You can swim, sleep in, go for a run, and even have period sex while wearing Flex Reusable Disc without having to worry about leaks or irritation. Since the disc collects your period blood rather than absorbing it, it’s ultra-comfortable both on land and underwater. Say goodbye to that waterlogged feeling and ditch tampons for good with Flex Reusable Disc.

Yes: You can 100% have penetrative or oral sex while wearing Flex Reusable Disc because it sits the vaginal fornix, it leaves the vaginal canal unobstructed—which means sex is on the table all month long.

Confused? Looking at a diagram of the disc inserted, it might seem like there isn’t a lot of room for anything else. But during arousal and intercourse, the vagina actually expands and elongates. This means that the disc will stay well out of the way during sex and, in most cases, neither you nor your partner will be able to feel it.

However, if your partner (or toy!) is particularly large, there may be some contact with the disc. This shouldn't cause any discomfort and the disc should stay in place. This depends partially on the position and each person’s unique anatomy—but there shouldn’t be any discomfort.

Bonus: You may have a stronger orgasm while wearing the disc. This is because the disc gently rubs against and stimulates the cervix, creating additional sensation and (for some) leading to a cervical orgasm. You're welcome!

Pro tip: Always insert a fresh/clean disc before getting down!

Warning: Flex Reusable Disc is not a contraceptive device and will not prevent pregnancy or protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Note: Consult with your physician prior to using Flex Reusable Disc if you are prone to vaginal/bacterial infections, yeast infections, urinary tract infections, or have other medical, anatomical, or genetic predispositions which may increase your risk for these types of infections.

If you experience painful or difficult urination, or an inability to completely empty your bladder while using a Flex menstrual disc, discontinue use immediately and consult with your physician.

Flex Cup falls into the ‘menstrual cup’ category of period products. Like the Reusable Disc, it has a lifespan of 2+ years and is made from medical-grade silicone. Unlike the Reusable Disc, Flex Cup is worn towards the middle or bottom of the vaginal canal and is held in place with suction.

Flex Cup is available in two sizes; Flex menstrual discs are available in one size designed to fit most vaginas.

Flex Plant+ Disc

While Flex Plant+ Disc is made with a more sustainable, plant-based polymer, it is not a biodegradable or compostable product. Do not flush or recycle Flex Plant+ Disc.

To dispose, simply place your used disc in its wrapper (if you saved it), in a Flex Eco Disposal Pouch, or wrap it in some toilet paper and place it in a regular wastebin. If preferred, you can rinse your disc before disposing. Some of our disc users prefer to remove and rinse their disc in the shower for easier cleanup.

Please note that Flex Plant+ Disc is a single-use product. It cannot be washed and reworn. After 12 hours of wear, you must remove your disc, dispose of it, and insert a new one.

Although disposable, Flex Plant+ Discs produce over 71% less waste than traditional period products.

All Flex period products (including Flex Disc, Plant+ Disc, Flex Reusable Disc, and Flex Cup) are made with hypoallergenic materials that won’t host toxic bacteria or alter your vaginal pH. They can be worn for up to 12 hours at a time and feature a higher capacity than traditional period products, like tampons or pads.

Flex Plant+ Disc comes in packaging that is 100% compostable. Its plant-based polymers capture CO2 from the atmosphere during production, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Bonus: All Flex menstrual discs can be worn during mess-free period sex™ since they don’t block the vaginal canal!

Want to know the difference between a menstrual cup, like Flex Cup, and a menstrual disc? Read our disc vs. cup FAQ here. And to compare all Flex menstrual discs side by side, check out our product comparison page.

Flex Plant+ Disc is the only plant-based disposable menstrual disc that can be safely worn for up to 12 hours. It offers the convenience of a single-use period product, with a smaller carbon footprint.

Flex Plant+ Disc features the same performance as the original Flex Disc—but it’s made with 40% plant-based polymers derived from sugarcane plants. Like Flex Disc, Plant+ Disc has the same capacity as 5+ super tampons (60 mL).

LEARN HOW IT WORKS.

TRY FLEX PLANT+ DISC.

Many Flex Plant+ Disc users have heavy flows! We’ve heard from tons of customers with especially heavy periods who swear by the disc, thanks to its higher capacity and 12-hour (read: all day) wear. It can hold up to 60 mL of fluid. That’s as much as 5+ super tampons!

Worried about leaks? Don’t stress. When inserted correctly, Flex Plant+ Disc shouldn’t leak.

Menstrual discs, including all Flex products, are regulated by the FDA; they are approved for a maximum of 12 hours of continuous wear. Please use as directed.

Flex Cup

With proper care, Flex Cup can last for years—so it’s better for your wallet and the planet. Most long-term cup users choose to replace their cup every two to three years, but it all depends on how well you clean and maintain your cup. Refer to our Flex Cup Cleaning Instructions to learn how to care for your silicone period cup and extend its lifespan.

If your cup is showing any signs of deterioration, such as powder or film on the cup, severe discoloration, persistent odor, etc.—that means it is time to replace.

As a reminder, do not use Flex Cup if you have a yeast or bacterial infection. Resume use only once the infection has completely cleared. If Flex Cup was inserted during a yeast or bacterial infection, remove it immediately and dispose of it in the trash.

We know you've probably been searching the internet for days to find the perfect menstrual cup and you're probably thinking, what's the difference? They're all pretty much the same, right? Not this cup!

Flex Cup can be safely worn for up to 12 hours. It's hypoallergenic and made with medical-grade silicone—but what makes it truly stand out is its super-soft, adjustable pull-tab. The pull-tab threads through a small hole at the base of the cup and attaches to the inner rim (at the top). When you pull down on the pull-tab, it collapses the side of the cup inwards, breaking the suction seal for you.

Wait, don’t other cups have a stem or “pull-tab,” too? Sure—but those stems are nothing more than a guide to help you find the base of your cup. If you tried to pull down on a traditional cup’s stem without first breaking the seal, you could put your vagina and cervix at risk for suction-related injury or discomfort.

Imagine trying to get a suction cup off your shower wall by pulling straight back: probably not gonna work, right? You have to get up under that suction cup by peeling one side away from the wall. Same idea with a menstrual cup! Typically, you have to manually grip the base of your cup with a finger and thumb in order to break the seal before you pull it out.

With Flex Cup, you can skip that step and use the pull-tab the same way you’d use a tampon string. This design makes Flex Cup beginner-friendly, more accessible for those with disabilities, and perfect for IUD users.

Many of our customers with heavy periods swear by Flex products. Flex Cup is a great option for users with heavy flows. Size 01 holds the equivalent of 2 super tampons, while Size 02 holds 3 super tampons-worth of period blood. Plus, the cup's adjustable pull-tab makes it easy to remove, empty mid-wear, and reinsert on the heaviest of days.

Nope! It's not broken! Flex Cup's innovative pull-tab was designed to make the difficult process of removing a menstrual cup that much easier. With this change, we know that sometimes we can get a bit too excited and pull a little too hard.

Has this happened to you? Don’t worry, this does not change your cup's effectiveness in any way and it's an easy fix!

Simply work the stopper back through the hole of your cup like so:

If you have any questions or need assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out: Call or text us at 800-931-0882, chat with us online, or email us at hello@flexfits.com.

The two main causes of leaking with Flex Cup are placement issues and not properly positioning the cup’s pull-tab. The pull-tab should be pulled through the bottom of your cup as shown below:

If you'd like to extend the stem so that it is a bit longer for easier access during removal, you can do that, too!

To ensure the cup is inserted properly:

  • Check that the cup has opened fully. You can do this by running a finger along the bottom of the cup.

  • If you feel any pleats or indentations, that means it's not opened fully, and that gap will cause a leakage issue.

  • Try pressing gently against your vaginal walls to create space for the cup to open up. You can also try rotating the cup slowly.

Another important step in combating leakage is figuring out the right fold for your body. Check out this article for tips and tricks for folding your Flex Cup.

Flex Cup is the only menstrual cup in the world designed to be as easy to remove as a tampon, thanks to its patented pull-tab. No more struggling to pinch the base of your menstrual cup to break the seal during removal: Flex Cup’s pull-tab does it for you. Just loop a finger through the ring and pull down slowly but firmly.

The pull-tab is attached to the inner rim of the cup, up at the top. It passes through a hole at the base of the cup. When you pull down on the pull-tab, it helps you break the seal by folding the rim of the cup inwards on itself, collapsing it down and creating a smaller diameter so you can easily pull your cup out.

Plus, the pull-tab stem is adjustable, so it can be easily accessed no matter where your cup is placed.

Menstrual cup insertion can take some time to master, but the main trick is to find a fold that works best for you. Here are three of our favorites:

For beginners, we recommend the punchdown fold. This fold creates a point to make insertion a little easier. Here’s what it looks like when using Flex Cup:

Next up is the 7 fold: When folded this way, your cup’s rim will look like the number seven—and also has a pointed tip to help with insertion. Here’s what it looks like:

You may also opt to use the C fold (sometimes called the U fold). This fold tends to open up the most easily in your body once inserted. Here’s what it looks like:

There are dozens of other folds out there that you can try. These three are great to get you started, but you can learn more about cup folds on the blog

Yes! Flex Cup, and all menstrual cups, are safe to wear while swimming in pools, oceans, rivers, hot tubs— wherever, whenever. Swimming with a menstrual cup means swimming with no strings, no waterlogged feeling, and no more worrying about leaks or frequent changes.

Because Flex Cup (and all menstrual cups) blocks the vaginal canal, it cannot be worn during penetrative sex. That said, feel free to explore other forms of foreplay and non-penetrative sex while wearing your cup!

LEARN HOW FLEX CUP WORKS.

The key to inserting Flex Cup is to find a fold and insertion method that works best for you. Using a menstrual cup should be easy, but as with any new period product, it can take a little practice to master the technique!

First and always, wash your hands. It’s a good idea to refresh your cup, too, by cleaning it with warm water and a mild soap or cleanser (like Flex Foaming Cleanser). Next, fold your cup (check out our favorites here). Once folded insert your cup into the vaginal canal as high or low as you'd like. Run your finger between the cup and your vaginal wall to make sure it’s popped open all the way.

You’re all set! Some users will do some squats or shimmy to make sure the cup is in place.

Lots of Flex Cup users have IUDs!

There is a small risk of any internally worn menstrual product getting caught on your IUD—including tampons, menstrual discs, and menstrual cups.

There are three main reasons for menstrual cup leakage: Your cup may not have popped open all the way during insertion, it may be inserted too high or too low, or it may be the wrong size.

To check that your Flex Cup has fully popped open once inserted, run a finger all the way around the base of the cup. If you can feel any dimpling or folding, you may need to remove your cup and reinsert (we recommend the punch-down fold for beginners).

Next, make sure your cup isn’t inserted too high up in the vaginal canal: For a comfortable fit and a complete seal, it may only need to be inserted about one knuckle deep. If neither of these adjustments help, get in touch with our Flexperts for personalized advice!

Taking good care of your Flex Cup will help to extend its lifespan and keep it clean and fresh for years. Here’s what we recommend:

During your period, remove, empty, and clean your menstrual cup at least once every 12 hours. Start with clean hands and grab some mild soap or cleanser (like Flex Foaming Cleanser).

Rinse your cup in cool water first—this will help prevent odor and staining. Then, unthread the pull-tab. Switch the water to warm and add a few pumps of cleanser. Use your fingers to massage the entire cup, including the pull-tab, inside, and outside surfaces, and then rinse.

Shake off excess water or let the cup air dry before reinserting. If you’re putting your cup away until your next period, make sure it’s completely dry before storing. Store Flex Cup in a cool, dry place in its included pouch. Never store your cup in an airtight container.

Once every month or so, it’s a good idea to boil your cup to sanitize it. Heat a pot of water to boiling on the stove. Place the cup in the water and boil for 10 minutes, keeping an eye on it the entire time and stirring occasionally to make sure the cup does not come in contact with the sides or bottom of the pot (as that could melt the silicone). Remove from the pot and let the cup cool and dry completely before storing.

Remember: Never wear Flex Cup if you have a yeast infection or other vaginal bacterial infection. Resume use only once the infection has completely cleared. If Flex Cup was inserted during a yeast or bacterial infection, remove it immediately and dispose of it in the trash. Do not attempt to clean and reuse your cup if it was worn during a vaginal infection.

Because Flex Cup is super soft and was designed to conform to your body, you shouldn't feel the pull-tab at all. If you do, try placing the ring of the pull-tab parallel to the labia, or tuck it up along the side of the cup during wear.

If you’re a first-time cup user, we recommend starting with the Flex Cup Size 01. If you’re a seasoned period cup pro, or if you’ve given birth vaginally 2+ times, we recommend Flex Cup Size 02. For most people, either size will work. It really comes down to choosing the best fit for your comfort.

Here’s a breakdown of each cup’s dimensions:

SIZE 01 SIZE 02
Capacity of 2 super tampons (22mL) Capacity of 3 super tampons (30mL)
For first-time menstrual cup users and pros with light or heavy flows For experienced menstrual cup users who prefer a larger size and those who've had 2+ vaginal births

Rinse well with warm water and allow the cup or disc to dry before reinserting.

Flex Eco Disposal Pouches are incredibly easy to use. Here’s how they work:

  1. Take out a disposal pouch and place on a clean surface (like your knee)

  2. Remove your period product as usual

  3. If you were using a menstrual disc, empty out the fluid in the toilet

  4. Place the used period product inside the disposal pouch

  5. Remove the adhesive strip and seal off the disposal pouch

  6. Place the pouch in a wastebin (do not flush)

Flex Eco Disposal Pouches are handy little bags that were designed to provide you with a discreet and mess-free period product disposal experience, whether you're at home or on the go! Use a Disposal Pouch to seal off your used menstrual disc, tampon, or pad before placing in a wastebin.

Flex Eco Disposal Pouches are made with plant-based BioFilm. Add them to your Flex Disc subscription or purchase a single pack of 8 pouches here

General

Nope! This is a bit of a menstrual myth. The vagina is a fascinating, magical muscle that easily stretches and returns to its natural shape—it's built to allow a baby through, after all! A menstrual disc or cup is much smaller than that and will not alter the vagina's elasticity or stretch it out over time.

In addition, Flex menstrual discs sit in the widest part of the vaginal canal, all the way at the back near your cervix—a space called the vaginal fornix. During insertion, you'll pinch the disc in half. It's super flexible and pinches to about the same size as a tampon. It'll only expand once it's well into the vaginal canal, conforming comfortably to the shape of your vaginal fornix.

We hope this info helps! Any other questions? Email us at hello@flexfits.com or call/text 800-931-0882.

Fibroids typically grow inside the uterus and therefore shouldn’t be affected by a menstrual cup or disc. That said, your period product will have a big impact on how well you’re able to deal with the symptoms of fibroids—such as heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged periods, and pelvic pain.

We believe that every person deserves a better period. Choosing the right product for your body, especially when you have an underlying condition, can be a game-changer. A menstrual disc (like Flex Disc or Flex Plant+ Disc) is a great alternative to tampons for those with fibroids: Both discs hold as much as 5+ super tampons and can be worn for up to 12 hours at a time, all without exacerbating pain or cramping.

If you prefer a reusable product, check out our new Flex Reusable Disc, which holds as much as 6+ super tampons. Flex Cup may also be a good option: Depending on the size you choose, it can hold up to 3+ super tampons. It’s one of the softest period cups on the market and, like our discs, it can be worn for up to 12 hours.

Keep in mind that, for some, menstrual cups are less comfortable than menstrual discs for those with pelvic pain. Cups sit lower in the vaginal canal and are held in place via suction, which creates some pressure against the vaginal walls. Discs, on the other hand, are worn in the vaginal fornix—the widest part of the vagina with the fewest nerve endings.

Keep in mind that every body is different and experiences will vary. Need more tips? Email us at hello@flexfits.com or call/text 800-931-0882. We're always happy to chat!

In all cases, we recommend contacting your healthcare provider or Ob/Gyn when trying a new period product if you have a diagnosed reproductive health condition.

Flex medical advisor and Ob/Gyn Dr. Jane van Dis has informed us that, if you have regular uterus didelphys, you should be able to use Flex menstrual discs (including Flex Disc, Flex Plant+ Disc, and Flex Reusable Disc). However, we wouldn't recommend them if you have two vaginas in addition to uterus didelphys.

We get this question a lot—we want to assure you that you're not alone! We have heard from many users with prolapses that our products are better options for them than others out there that they've tried. That being said, it really depends on the type of prolapse you have. The only way to be sure that a cup or disc will work for you is to test it out.

We also recommend speaking to your doctor or Ob/Gyn before trying a new period product for the first time: They'll be able to give you more detailed information about what may or may not work for your unique anatomy.

If you'd like to try both a cup and a disc at the same time, check out our Flex Cup listing, which comes with two free disposable Flex Discs

We believe in creating a world where people with periods—and the planet—thrive. These are just some of our initial sustainability practices, with more on the way:

Flex Disc generates 60% less waste than traditional period products. Although it's a single-use product, it's designed for longer wear (up to 12 hours) and holds as much blood as 5+ super tampons. This means less plastic waste going to landfill when compared to traditional period products.

Our newest disposable disc, Flex Plant+ Disc, is made with 40% plant-based polymers derived from sugarcane plants. Production of this eco-friendly polymer captures CO2, rather than emitting CO2, resulting in an estimated reduction of 176% KG of CO2 emissions compared to a non-plant-based polymer.

The reusable Flex Cup, made with 100% medical-grade silicone, lasts for years when properly cared for—as does our new Flex Reusable Disc. Both are zero-waste products.

Our wipes are made with plant cellulose and are biodegradable when flushed (flushable per INDA guidelines). Our Eco Disposal Pouches are made with plant-based BioFilm, as well.

All our products are made in the USA and Canada, meaning fewer carbon emissions thanks to shorter journeys from production to our warehouses. Since one-fifth of worldwide carbon emissions are caused by transport, we’re committed to keeping our production local and reducing our impact.

Our product packaging for Flex Disc, Flex Reusable Disc, and Flex Cup is 100% recyclable, and our Flex Plant+ Disc 12-count packaging is 100% compostable.

If you have sustainability suggestions for us, we’d love to hear them—so please feel free to get in touch!

PCOS & Flex

People diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) tend to experience irregular periods, lighter-than-normal bleeding, and/or frequent spotting. These symptoms are aggravating and, more often than not, traditional period products just don’t cut it. Using a tampon when spotting, for instance, can cause irritation or even vaginal microabrasions (which is why they should not be used for light bleeding).

The good news is, many of our customers have PCOS and swear by Flex products to manage their unpredictable cycles. Menstrual discs, like Flex Disc, Flex Plant+ Disc, or Flex Reusable Disc, are a great alternative to tampons and pads. They’re made with medical-grade materials that glide in and out easily no matter how heavy or light your flow. Plus, they can be worn for up to 12 hours at a time. When inserted correctly, you shouldn’t be able to feel your disc at all.

Menstrual cups, like Flex Cup, are also 100% safe to use with PCOS. It all comes down to personal preference and your own unique anatomy. Every body is different, so you may find that one works out a bit better for you than the other.

Endometriosis & Flex

We have a plethora of customers with endometriosis who swear by Flex products to get through their often painful and heavy periods.

Menstrual discs, in particular, are a great alternative to tampons for those with severe cramping. This is because they sit in the vaginal fornix—the very back of the vagina, where there are fewer nerve endings—and do not block your vaginal canal. Unlike a tampon, which expands and puts active pressure on your vaginal walls, a disc collects your period and flexes with your body. When placed correctly, you shouldn’t be able to feel your menstrual disc at all.

Flex Disc and Flex Plant+ Disc can each hold 5+ super tampons-worth of blood (60 mL). Flex Reusable Disc has an even higher capacity, holding 6+ super tampons-worth (70 mL).

If a menstrual cup is your preference, Flex Cup also offers a higher capacity than tampons depending on the size you choose. Our Size 01 holds 22 mL, or as much as 2+ super tampons, and our Size 02 holds 30 mL, as much as 3+ super tampons.

Flex products are FDA-registered and can be safely worn for up to 12 hours at a time. Need more details? Read Ob/Gyn Dr. Jane van Dis’ explanation as to why Flex Disc is a great solution for endo warriors in this article.

Flex products have not been linked to TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome). Unlike tampons, Flex menstrual discs and cups collect your period, rather than absorbing it. They’re made with medical-grade, biologically inert (non-porous) materials that do not host toxic bacteria or disrupt your vaginal pH.

Always wash your hands before inserting or removing your period product to prevent introducing bacteria from your fingers to your vagina.

Flex products are FDA-approved for up to 12 hours of wear. Don’t wear Flex products for longer than 12 hours without changing. Single-use Flex products (including Flex Disc and Flex Plant+ Disc) must be thrown away after wear; they cannot be washed and reworn. Flex Reusable Disc and Flex Cup must be emptied and cleaned prior to reinsertion every 12 hours.

If you have previously been diagnosed with menstrual TSS, we do not recommend using any internally-worn products, including Flex menstrual discs or cups.

All Flex products are hypoallergenic and are not made with natural rubber latex, BPA, PFOA, or phthalates. This is important to us and one of the reasons Flex exists. Flex is an FDA-registered medical devices company; our period cups and discs are made with medical-grade materials.

Still have questions? We get it—check out the conversation we had with our medical advisor, Ob/Gyn Dr. Jane van Dis, who recommends Flex Disc as a great alternative to tampons and pads.

Vaginas are like snowflakes: No two are exactly alike, and that includes the height of your cervix (AKA the “length” of your vaginal canal).

The height of your cervix is just one factor among many that can dictate whether or not a particular period product will work for you. Other factors to keep in mind include the angle of your cervix, the diameter of your vaginal fornix, and the length and position of your pubic bone in relation to your internal anatomy.

Flex products are designed to fit most bodies, but we recognize that there’s no such thing as one size fits all. If you already know you have a high or low cervix and are wondering how that will impact your experience with a Flex menstrual disc or cup, here’s some helpful information:

P.S. Want to learn how to find, feel, and measure your cervix? Read all about it on the blog!

High cervix:

The number one period product challenge for people with a high cervix is usually related to removal. Because your cervix is farther up in your body, reaching the rim of your menstrual disc or the base of your menstrual cup may be more difficult (this also depends on the length of your fingers). But rest assured that you can still use both products with success!

If you’re using Flex Disc, Flex Plant+ Disc, or Flex Reusable Disc, all you need to do is practice using your pelvic floor muscles to shift your disc further down your vaginal canal. Once you pop the front rim out from behind your pubic bone, it should be easy to hook with your finger and pull out. To engage your pelvic floor, gently bear down as if you were trying to poop, or simply think about shifting your vaginal muscles forward (like ejecting a DVD).

If you’re using Flex Cup, removal should be easy thanks to the patented pull-tab, which breaks the cup’s seal for you. This means you don’t need to go fishing around with two fingers to pinch the base of your cup—just reach for the pull tab, loop a finger through the ring, and pull down slowly but firmly. Plus, the pull-tab is adjustable in length, so you can customize its position however works best for your body.

Those with a high cervix should remember to insert their cup lower down in the vaginal canal so that the pull-tab either hangs externally or remains easy to reach once the cup has opened up completely.

Low cervix:

Most individuals with a low cervix should have no problem using a menstrual cup or disc once they find the right insertion angle/position for their product in relation to their anatomy.

With a menstrual disc like Flex Disc, those with a low cervix might notice that insertion is pretty easy since you don’t need to reach as far back. Just remember to angle your disc down and back, towards your tailbone, as far as it will go—and then tuck the front rim up behind your pubic bone. Use your middle finger or forefinger to tuck (or pull) the front rim straight up towards your belly button until it feels secure.

What about Flex Cup? Those with a low cervix should be careful not to insert the cup too far up the vaginal canal, as you don’t want it to completely surround or suction to the cervix. We recommend starting with a smaller cup size.

We want you to have the best period of your life, which is why Flex Cup comes with our Perfect Fit Guarantee. As always, contact us if you’re having trouble! Call/text 800-931-0882, email hello@flexfits.com, or submit an online request here

Anyone who menstruates can use Flex products. However, they may not be the best fit for teens who are on the smaller side for their age group. In addition, keep in mind that our products are internally worn and manually inserted (without an applicator), so it’s important to be comfortable with your body. We always recommend speaking with your teen’s doctor if you have any concerns.

Have any other questions? Email us at hello@flexfits.com or call/text 800-931-0882. We're always happy to chat!

Lots of Flex users have IUDs!

There is a small risk of any internally worn menstrual product getting caught on your IUD—including tampons, menstrual discs, and menstrual cups. That’s why we recommend consulting with your healthcare provider or Ob/Gyn prior to using a new period product if you have an intrauterine device. They will have more information about your specific IUD and how it’s positioned in relation to your internal anatomy. They can also trim your IUD strings shorter if needed.

For more info, check out our blog article about using discs with an IUD.

Pads & Liners

We currently carry one liner and one pad to keep you covered:
Flex Bamboo Liners are 180mm (7.08”) long with no wings and a 10mL absorbency
Flex Bamboo Pads are 240mm (9.44"") long with wings and a 100mL absorbency

Have you ever felt like you could smell yourself on your period? You’re not alone. Odor is one of the #1 period complaints, especially amongst pad and liner users.

Companies have made BILLIONS off of us selling pads, tampons, douches, sprays, and washes promising to make our vaginas smell like a spring morning. These products contain additives that can irritate skin and make odor even worse—artificial fragrances, herbs, and perfumes.

Flex Bamboo Pads & Liners are super unique because they fight odor NATURALLY, with ZERO added fragrances, pesticides, herbs, deodorants, GMOs, or elemental chlorine. Plus, bamboo has been shown to be more absorbent than cotton. Our ultra-thin pads and liners are super absorbent and long-lasting for all-day protection without the bulk.

Of course! The truth is that many of us like to wear a backup, no matter what product is your go-to. Using our liner or pad makes sense for that extra layer of protection to keep you worry-free throughout the day!

Nope! They're also made without dyes, herbs, elemental chlorine, pesticides, or deodorants!

Of course! Our pads and liners are for every body.

Yes! Each pad and liner is individually wrapped to carry on-the-go.

We take transparency seriously, so we're happy to share that you can readily find that info on the pad and liner product pages!

Heck yes. We want to make sure your pad stays put and doesn't bunch!

Yes! Our pads are made with premium Japanese Sumitomo SAP. SAP is the real MVP when it comes to leak protection in our pads. Its high absorbency and ability to lock in liquid make it super reliable. It works by distributing moisture evenly to keep you dry and comfortable without unnecessary bulk. Basically, it's quietly doing its job to keep you worry-free during your period.

Yes! Flex Bamboo Pads are great for every type of flow as they can hold 100mL of menstrual fluid. That's equivalent to 3.38oz or 6.76 tablespoons. Fun fact, the average menstruator bleeds about 2-4 tablespoons over the course of their ENTIRE period. You'll be covered.

Definitely. You can use our liners however you'd need—backup, drips, discharge, etc.

Yes, while we recommend changing your pad every 4-8 hours, they can be worn overnight! Just change them when you rise and shine.

First, let's tell you what's not in our pads... no fragrance, no deodorants, no herbs... We focused on science! Our unique combo of natural bamboo and premium Japanese Sumitomo SAP is ultra-absorbent and maintains dryness which can prevent an environment for odor-causing bacteria to live and grow. It's that simple!

Our liners feature an air-infused absorbent layer that quickly locks in drips, while natural bamboo fiber helps maintain dryness and prevent odor without fragrances, deodorants, or herbs! Bamboo fiber has a special substance called ""bamboo kun"" that has been shown to prevent bacteria growth, which naturally minimizes living conditions for odor-causing bacteria. Pretty cool.

We can proudly share they have been independently tested and found to contain no ""forever chemicals"". They are FREE from PFAS!
